Telescopic sight for grandmother
A BUSINESSWOMAN from Yorkshire has become one of the first people in the country to undergo a ground-breaking treatment to implant a miniature telescope in her eye.
Grandmother Roz Jowett, 57, of Hipperholme, near Halifax, was losing her sight due to a form of macular degeneration and could no longer go out alone at night, drive or recognise faces across a room.
But just two days after her first operation she was seeing nearly well enough to classify as normal – which is well ahead of the normal driving standard.
The procedure, which has been developed in Italy, involved the implantation of a pair of lenses that divert images away from the damaged macular in the eye on to a healthy part of the retina using the principle of the Galilean telescope.
Experts believe the treatment could offer new hope to thousands of people who suffer from the condition, which is the most common cause of blindness in the over-50s.
Leading eye specialist Shafiq Rehman, who carried out the procedure at the Yorkshire Eye Hospital at Apperley Bridge, near Bradford, said he was "delighted" with the outcome.
