Tetley's cask beer will survive, says Carlsberg
REAL ale lovers have welcomed the news that talks are ongoing to continue production of the cask version of Tetleys.
Tetley's Brewery, in Leeds, is to close in 2011, but yesterday Carlsberg UK said it was committed to continue brewing the beer in Britain, preferably in Yorkshire or the North.
Last night the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) welcomed the news but called for Carlsberg to consider still keeping part of its Leeds plant open.
Camra vice-chairman Bob Stukins said: "The concern
that we have within Camra is that most global building
organisations tend not to be too sympathetic to cask-conditioned brewed beer which is what is brewed in Leeds. What we would ideally like to see is that the beer is still brewed in Leeds, ideally to be brewed on the site where its brewed at the moment."
But he applauded any move that supported cask beer brewing.
A spokesman for Carlsberg UK said: "Tetley's is very important to us and will continue to play a major part in our future. We will ensure that Tetley's great taste and quality remain the same."
Tetley's owners, Carlsberg UK, announced last year the Hunslet Road brewery would close in 2011.
The decision threatens the tradition of Tetley's being brewed in the city which dates back to 1822 when Joshua Tetley took on the brewery.
