That £250,000 is just Grand

Opera North and Leeds Grand Theatre renamed their Grand Hall yesterday in celebration of a £250,000 donation by a Yorkshire publishing house.

The hall will now be known as Emerald Grand Hall in recognition of Bradford-based Emerald Publishing Group Ltd's gift. The offering will help to restore the hall as part of the theatre's Transformation project, the second phase of which begins in September, and will restore the adjoining Assembly Room as a centre for education and performance.

Emerald owner Dr Keith Howard, pictured, is a long-standing supporter of Opera North and has made a number of donations previously. He said of his most recent contribution: "Opera North has been a source of immense pleasure to my wife and I over the years and I am proud to have such a close association with the company. The completion of the Transformation project will provide much improved facilities for Opera North and audiences of Leeds Grand Theatre and we are happy to be able to play a part in that." As part of the project, which is a three-way collaboration between Opera North, Leeds Grand Theatre and Leeds City Council, the theatre's dilapidated facade and foyers will be rejuvenated.

Michael Beverley, Opera North's chairman of the board of trustees, said: "The Trans-formation project is vital in ensuring the continuing success of Opera North and it is only through the generosity of individuals like Dr Howard and his company that it can be realised. The Emerald Grand Hall will be a lasting tribute to this wonderful spirit of giving and I cannot thank Emerald enough for all its support."
