The General 'organised teenage gang murder from jail'

A GANG member known as The General organised the murder of a Sheffield teenager from his cell at the Wolds Prison near Hull, a court heard yesterday.

Tarek Chaiboub, 17, was gunned down in broad daylight as part of a feud between groups of men who named themselves after Sheffield postcodes.

But the shooting in Sheffield was allegedly orchestrated by Nigel Ramsey, 23, also known as Rocky, as he sat in his prison cell at the Wolds Prison, which is more than 60 miles away.

Although he could not have been present at the murder or at a previous attempt on the teenager's life, Ramsey made dozens of mobile phone calls from jail and records revealed he was the prime instigator, a jury heard. Prosecutor Paul Watson QC told Sheffield Crown Court: "He wanted Chaiboub dead. Of course he was in no position to do that himself and so orchestrated both the first attempt and the murder."

Chaiboub was shot dead in a gunfight at lunchtime outside a barber's shop in a "pre-planned and cold-blooded execution", according to the prosecution.

"This was not Chicago in the 1930s. Still less was it the East End of London in the 1960s. This happened less than a year ago on a busy thoroughfare in the Pitsmoor area of Sheffield," said Mr Watson.

Chaiboub, whose nickname was GT, was shot in the back from about two feet by one of three masked men with a sawn-off pump action single-barrel shotgun. He tried to defend himself with a small pistol.

Just five days previously he had been viciously stabbed in the stomach, back, hands and leg and needed hospital treatment for a perforated liver.

The prosecution says both attacks were carried out by members of the S3 postcode gang – based in the Pitsmoor and Burngreave area of Sheffield –- which had fallen out with Chaiboub.

Mr Watson said: "The whole thing was set up and organised by Nigel Ramsey from the prison where he was being detained at the time."

The feud which split the gang was sparked when S3 member Brett Blake, 23, was stabbed to death at a Sheffield nightclub on June 7 last year by fellow gang members Danny Hockenhull, 24, and Curtis Goring, 27.

Two friends of Blake's killers, Isiah Nelson, 26, and Esmond Thompson, 25, then stabbed S3 member Junior Liversidge, who was Nigel Ramsey's cousin, to within an inch of his life the day after Blake's funeral.

The court heard Chaiboub "had a foot in both camps" and knew both the Liversidge camp and the men who tried to kill him. He was branded a traitor by the Liversidge camp, which believed he had informed on the whereabouts of Liversidge.

Within 24 hours of the Liversidge stabbing, Chaiboub was found stabbed and bleeding heavily near his home. It is alleged that Michael Chattoo, 21, and Javan Galloway, 20, stabbed Chaiboub in revenge for the attack on Liversidge.

Although he survived and came out of hospital, five days later Chaiboub was shot dead after going for a haircut in Pitsmoor.

Three hooded figures were seen to walk to the barbershop and Chaiboub produced a small handgun from his side.

The prosecution says the three hooded men were Chattoo, Nigel Ramsey's brother Denzil Ramsey, 20, and a 17-year-old youth who cannot be named.

Nigel Ramsey denied being a member of S3 or having any part in the murder or stabbing. He also denied making mobile calls to people on the outside of prison.

Chattoo admits stabbing Chaiboub but says it was in self-defence and claims he was not present at the shooting. Galloway said he was at his girlfriend's home both at the time of the stabbing and the shooting.

The 17-year-old said at the time of the shooting he was with Denzil Ramsey and two friends.

Chattoo, Nigel Ramsey, Denzil Ramsey and the 17-year-old all deny murdering Chaiboub, of Wincobank, Sheffield. Chattoo, Nigel Ramsey and Galloway also deny attempting to murder Chaiboub five days previously.

The trial continues.
