Thistles threat to reserve's wildlife
A LOCAL Nature Reserve which has hundreds of species of wildflowers, grasses, trees and shrubs and is a ground-nesting site for skylarks and meadow pipits, has a serious problem with thistles.
Hob Moor in York was designated in 2003 because of its importance as a wildlife site and as a recreational and educational resource, but thistles are reducing the area suitable for ground-nesting birds and competing with wildflowers.
York Council and the Friends of Hob Moor agree something needs to be done. The decision has been made to cut and remove thistles from the perimeter of the site and areas where ground-nesting birds are not present.
The council says the intention is to weaken the thistles when they are at their most vulnerable. This will be followed by further strimming until September.
The vegetation from the cut areas will be collected and piled on site away from residential properties. The material would be prohibitively expensive to move and is not of sufficient quality for farmers to use as feed.
The action is part of a longer term plan to control the creeping thistles on Hob Moor and protect the wildflowers and nesting sites.
