Thousands join charity fun race

Record numbers of runners took to the streets in Leeds to help raise money for vulnerable older people.

Thousands of people joined the 25th Leeds Abbey Dash 10k road race starting outside Leeds Town Hall yesterday in aid of Age Concern and Help the Aged, which merged earlier this year.

Leeds model Nell McAndrew, who was due to be leading a warm-up for runners, was forced to pull out because of a cold.

But participants were able to run alongside Claire Young, a finalist in TV's The Apprentice.

This year Leeds City Council expanded the maximum number of entries from 6,000 to 8,000. It was hoped that the fundraiser would clock up 200,000 to help isolated older people.

Proceeds from the dash will fund a vital HandyVan service in the Leeds and West Yorkshire area which helps older people feel safer in their homes.
