Thousands turn out to see historic farm machinery at annual rally
THE history of agricultural machinery throughout the decades was on display in North Yorkshire at the weekend – at one of the UK's largest rallies of vintage farm vehicles.
More than 1,100 exhibitors from across the country and as far afield as Germany, France, Belgium and Holland were at Newby Hall, near Ripon, to showcase the machinery
Among the vehicles on display was a Wallace and Clark tractor made in Guiseley that dates from the turn of the 20th century, as well as Big Bud, thought to be one of the world's largest tractors.
The giant 650 horsepower vehicle from America has eight tyres, each 5ft 6ins in diameter.
The annual rally, first staged at Newby Hall in 2006,is organised by the Yorkshire Vintage Association.
The trucks, cars and stationary farm machinery attracted more tha 5,000 visitors over the two days. This year's event included a "lend and lease" theme that showcased tractors brought from the US during the Second World War before being sold to UK farmers with the money paying for further arms and ammunition.
Association secretary David Ayers said: "The rally always provides a wonderful opportunity to see how the farming industry has evolved through the passing years."
