Three generations of film stars gather for Yorkshire premiere
THREE generations of filmmaking talent trod the red carpet at the National Media Museum on Friday night, as the 15th Bradford International Film Festival opened.
The English premiere of Is Anybody There? stars Sir Michael Caine, David Morrissey, Anne-Marie Duff, Leslie Phillips and Bill Milner.
Veteran stars Sylvia Syms (Ice Cold in Alex) and Thelma Barlow (Coronation Street) joined newcomer Bill Milner (Son of Rambow) and co-stars Ralph Ineson (The Office), Ralph Riach (Hamish Macbeth) alongside director John Crowley and writer Peter Harness to celebrate the screening.
Stars from the movie joined British screen legend Virginia McKenna for the opening night gala. McKenna was presented with the BIFF Lifetime Achievement Award for her film work at the event. Video interview: Virginia McKenna
A retrospective of her films will play throughout the festival and she will take part in a Screentalk interview in the Museum's Pictureville Cinema to discuss her fascinating career.
Her retrospective includes Carve Her Name With Pride, A Town Like Alice, Swallows and Amazons and Born Free, as well as a screening of the lost classic Play of the Month: Passage to India.
BIFF artistic director Tony Earnshaw said: "We are all looking forward to welcoming the largest-ever gathering of talent for an opening night gala. It's very exciting and once again brings glamour and prestige to the festival, the museum and the city of Bradford."
For the following two weeks, the museum's beautifully designed cinemas will host over 200 screenings, presenting films in every format, from 16mm and 35mm to 70mm, 3-strip Cinerama and IMAX 3D and featuring film from Mexico, Latvia, Japan, Korea, France, Australia, Great Britain, Canada, The Netherlands and the USA.
This year's festival selection was made from a record number of submissions and includes a wide variety of premieres and previews, a new documentary strand, a Widescreen Weekend and Uncharted States of America, which brings genuinely independent films from the US to UK audiences for the first time.
The Shine Award will also be presented to the best new short film selected from hundreds of entries.
Other international highlights include Swedish vampire thriller Let the Right One In, and the black comedy Parking set in late-night Taipei.
