Titanic exhibition attracts crowds to dockside museum
A POCKET watch frozen by water showing the exact time the Titanic sank is among the exhibits pulling the crowds in to a Grimsby museum.
An exhibition about the doomed ocean liner, which sank in 1912, has attracted more than 4,000 people to the Fishing Heritage Centre since it opened a month ago.
The Titanic Honour and Glory exhibition, some of which is free to see, tells the story of the liner and her sister ships and contains original artefacts from the vessel, including chinaware and silver and interior fittings.
It also features props and costumes from the blockbuster film Titanic, including Kate Winslet's dresses and the "Heart of the Ocean" necklace.
There is also a chance to step into a recreated third-class cabin.
Titanic Honour and Glory is a touring exhibition that has been seen by more than 2m people since it opened in the UK in 2002.
It has been named one of the top five exhibitions in the country.
It is run by a small team and is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the White Star Line and their fleet of ships – which included Olympic, Titanic and Britannic.
Bert Kortbeek, who sailed from Holland with his family to see the display, said: "The Titanic exhibition is really fascinating and it's a great opportunity to see some of the original items from this famous ship.
"My wife and I have been to Grimsby before and liked this museum, it's one of the main reasons that we came back with our children.
"After visiting this museum you understand the history of the town, how it grew to being such an important fishing port and its more recent downturn in trade."
Visitors can also tour the museum to find out about the town's own maritime heritage – including a chance to discover what life was like for trawlermen in the 1950s.
Entry to the main part of the exhibition costs 6 for adults, 2 for children, 4 for concessions or 12 for a family ticket.
