Top-class events ‘to bring £10m into city’
A MULTI-million pound programme of sports, culture and leisure events to run in Sheffield this year was unveiled yesterday.
Experts estimate that the varied programme will bring an economic value to the Sheffield area of “at least £10m” and will also provide “significant international and national television exposure.”
Highlights from this year’s sporting programme include next month’s UK Indoor Athletics Trials and Championships at the English Institute of Sport; the ETTA National Table Tennis Championships in March at Ponds Forge; the World Snooker Championships at the Crucible in April; the National Masters Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge in October and the British Ice Figure and Dance Skating Championships at iceSheffield in November.
Outside of sport, events will include the DocFest in June; the Children’s Festival in June and July, the “Cliffhanger” outdoor pursuits festival in July, Tramlines music festival in July, Art in the Gardens in September and the Sheffield Food Festival, also in September.
Coun Helen Mirfin-Boukouris, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for business, jobs and growth, said yesterday: “The Major Events Calendar is the jewel in Sheffield’s cultural crown, and this year is no exception with an outstanding array of events planned.
“At the council we work very hard to lead work across the city bringing elite national and international sporting events to Sheffield, and we know major events brought £8m collectively into the city’s economy last year, exceeding all expectations.
“Seeing these elite teams and athletes coming to our city to compete also has a positive impact on people in Sheffield in terms of inspiring people to get more active.”
Brendan Moffett, director of Marketing Sheffield, added that the programme gives a “significant economic and profiling boost for Sheffield”.
