Tories pledge unequivocal support for climate talks
A Conservative government would take strong action to tackle climate change despite grassroots opposition within the party, a shadow cabinet member said yesterday.
Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary Greg Clark said the Tories were "unequivocal" in their support for the Government in the negotiations at Copenhagen's UN summit.
But he attacked Labour's record on promoting clean technology and reducing carbon emissions in the UK.
He said he would be attending the talks but acknowledged a final deal would not necessarily be reached.
"It is possible Copenhagen may not conclude at Copenhagen. The negotiations may continue and actually I would hope they did continue rather than some sort of weak deal was done.
"One of my reasons for going is to signal that the British Opposition shares the view of the British Government ... unequivocally.
"We have a shared view on this, I think a strong view, and there will be no change, no interruption in the degree of our commitment. I think it is very important that everyone in Copenhagen knows that."
