Tourism leaders look to city’s landmark 800th anniversary
A NATIONAL marketing strategy has been unveiled by tourism leaders to promote York to the mark the 800th anniversary since the city was granted a Royal Charter.
York has attempted to carve out a reputation for a leading destination for festivals in recent years, and the publicity drive will highlight an expanded programme in 2012. The annual Jorvik Viking Festival will be staged next month, followed by a new chocolate festival in April and the biggest and most elaborate production ever of the York Mystery Plays in August. A new Science and Innovation Grand Tour will be held during May, June and July, and Britain’s biggest ever rail festival is being organised at the National Railway Museum and will also be staged in June.
Visit York’s chief executive, Gillian Cruddas, celebrated the campaign’s launch yesterday by setting the time on a 19th century clock at the National Railway Museum. The historic timepiece was once used to set all York’s railway clocks.
Publicity will involve a national marketing campaign and details will also be provided to Visit York’s 8,000 followers on social networking sites, Twitter and Facebook. The marketing drive has been launched to tie in with the 800-year anniversary since York was granted its Royal Charter by King John.
