Town appeals for support in parking charges battle

A TOWN council is calling for support in the fight against controversial car parking charges.

Pocklington Town Council said it had not been consulted about the charges, and making people pay to park in the town for the first time would be "disastrous" for local traders in a recession.

There has been controversy since East Riding Council announced it was bringing in charges in Anlaby, Cottingham, Willerby, Hessle, Hedon, Pocklington, and Stamford Bridge.

Pocklington's Mayor Jeff Shepherd said they would fight the proposals "in every way it can", adding: "The councillors hope other councils also affected will join with them to bring about public meetings, petitions and letters of support. The council has also requested the support of elected parish representatives in its fight.

"Pocklington relies on people coming into the town to visit the shops, Arts Centre and Burnby Hall and Gardens.

"If the charges are implemented the knock-on will be to force drivers to park in the streets round the centre.

"Parking charges will seriously damage the businesses and shops which are already struggling in these difficult economic times."

A review panel, which recommended introducing the charges, insists it is about making the system "fairer" as towns like Beverley and Bridlington have shouldered the majority of the fees in the past and the changes would see some motorists paying less to park.

However, under the proposals annual permit-holders in Beverley will see their charges rise by 150 to 500. Under the scheme the council is looking to pay consultants 200,000 to set up more controlled parking zones – simply to deal with drivers trying to escape charges by parking on the street instead.
