Town gets crime camera coverage
A NETWORK of security cameras across North Yorkshire market towns has been extended.
Bedale is the latest Hambleton community to become covered by CCTV after the installation of three cameras, taking the total number across the district to 49.
Residents hope the 90,000 system will help t o cut anti-social behaviour. Two of the new cameras overlook Bedale High Street while the third covers the Bridge Street car park.
Existing cameras in Northallerton, Thirsk and Stokesley have assisted North Yorkshire police in more than 280 arrests in the past 18 months.
Control room operators have provided 367 tapes of incidents which have then been used as evidence in court.
Hambleton's first fixed CCTV camera was installed in 1995 and all are monitored from a control room in Northallerton.
The council's strategy is to cover main shopping locations, car parks and major connecting routes.
