Trio charged over July 7 bombings

THREE Leeds men have been charged in connection with the July 7 bombings.

Mohammed Shakil, 30, a taxi driver of Firth Mount, Beeston, and Waheed Ali, previously known as Shipon Ullah, 23, of Colwyn Road, Beeston were arrested in the terminal building at Manchester Airport last month as they prepared to board a flight to Pakistan.

Sadeer Saleem, 26, was later arrested at his home in Rowland Place, Beeston.

The three have been charged "that between November 1 2004 and June 29 2005 they unlawfully and maliciously conspired" with the London bombers and others "to cause explosions on the Transport for London system and/or tourist attractions in London," the Crown Prosecution said.

These are the first charges in connection with the suicide bombings that rocked the capital nearly two years ago, killing 52 innocent people.

Suicide bombers Mohammad Sidique Khan, Shehzad Tanweer, and Hasib Hussein all had strong links to the Beeston area. Their co-conspirator Jermaine Lindsay grew up in Huddersfield, but was living in Aylesbury with his wife at the time of the bombings.

Announcing the charges, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of Scotland Yard's Counter Terrorism Command, promised the investigation into the July 7 attacks would continue.

He said his team now had a clearer understanding of the conspiracy behind the bombings and said further arrests were likely.

Mr Clarke appealed to the community in West Yorkshire to help his officers and said they needed information about the four suicide bombers themselves and about the three who have been charged today.

"We need to know about their movements, meetings and travel. Who did they meet? Where did they go? But as well as this who else knew about what was happening?

"We will find out, it is only a matter of time. It is highly likely that in due course there will be further arrests."
