Trust bid to combat health inequalities across district
HEALTH chiefs yesterday launched a massive public consultation in a bid to cut health inequalities and improve services for 560,000 patients across Sheffield.
The Achieving Balanced Health programme has been launched by Sheffield Primary Care Trust and aims to reach out to people who have needed GP, dentist and other services and find out which areas have the most need.
According to the PCT the consultation, which will run until June, aims to "reduce the health inequalities between the most and least healthy people in the city".
The trust hopes it will attract responses by distributing a questionnaire to local community groups. The questionnaire will also be available in libraries, GP surgeries, dental surgeries and pharmacies.
People are also being invited to take part in a series of roadshows across the city, where they will be able to speak with representatives from the trust. It is hoped that the feedback from the consultation will help in the development of a five-year plan which will target the right levels of service at the right areas.
Speaking after a launch event at Sheffield City Hall, Jan Sobieraj, Chief Executive of Sheffield Primary Care Trust, said: "While in some ways, the health of people in Sheffield has never been better, the PCT and our partners have an obligation to take direct action to help reduce the gap between those with the best and worst health in the city.
"The feedback will be used to increase use and awareness of convenient local services in areas that have higher levels of health need."
Wafting away smoke does nothing to reduce the harm from passive smoking, according to a new Government campaign.
Nearly 85 per cent of cigarette smoke cannot be seen and is odourless, meaning smokers who waft away smoke or open windows are failing to protect their loved ones.
New adverts, right, warn of the dangers of second-hand smoke, calling it the "invisible killer". TV adverts, to be broadcast from Monday, shows a family wedding and the impact of one cigarette on relatives, including children.
