THREE wind turbines have arrived at the site of a new wind farm on the border between West and South Yorkshire.

Banks Renewables is investing around £10m in the Hazlehead wind farm and has been carrying out preparatory work for the past six months.

The site is brownfield land between the villages of Carlecotes and Crow Edge, near Penistone.

Banks is aiming to have the wind farm connected to the National Grid by the end of the year.

Mark Dowdall, environment and community director at the Banks Group, said: “This is a real milestone for the Hazlehead project, and after undertaking a great deal of work to make the site ready for their arrival, we’re excited at the prospect of seeing the turbines in place.

“Banks is making a significant investment in creating this new wind farm, one that will not only go a long way towards meeting the area’s renewable energy generation targets, but which will also provide a positive long-term legacy through the community benefits fund that will commence when we start to generate power in just a few months time.

“Onshore wind farms such as Hazlehead have a crucial role to play in helping to produce the energy we will consume in the foreseeable future, and Banks is proud to be at the forefront of the drive to produce more the country’s energy from renewable sources.”

When fully operational the three-turbine scheme is expected to generate up to six megawatts of electricity. The turbines have been provided by the Edinburgh-based firm REpower UK. Each turbine will take up to three days to put into place.
