TV chef appalled as mothers' school run delivers junk food
Emma Dunlop CELEBRITY chef Jamie Oliver has hit back at two Yorkshire mothers who are running junk food into a school claiming that the "kids need a bit of fat in their diet."
Julie Critchlow and Sam Walker deliver fish and chips, pies, and burgers to children at Rawmarsh Comprehensive in Rotherham every day because they claim the youngsters are sick of "low fat rubbish".
But last night, Jamie Oliver, whose campaign for healthier school dinners has led to fried foods being sidelined in favour of salads and pasta, said: "If these mums want to effectively shorten the lives of their kids and others kids, then that's down to them."
The mothers began their junk food runs after headteacher John Lambert ruled that pupils are not allowed to leave at lunchtime to visit the local chip shop.
Mrs Walker, 41, of Monkwood Road, Rawmarsh, whose son John, 11, goes to the school, said: "This is all down to that Jamie Oliver. Well I don't like him or what he stands for – he is forcing our kids to be more picky about their food."
Mrs Critchlow, also of Monkwood Road, who has two children at the school, added: "Kids need a bit of fat in their diet – there is nothing wrong with burgers and chips."
This latest row comes just days before Channel Four screens Jamie's new series Return To School Dinners.
A spokesman from Mr Oliver, who is in Australia, said: "Jamie's view is that it is important for all school kids to have a nutritious hot and affordable meal at school every day."
But the mothers remain defiant and vow to carry on.
