Twins with Eurovision dream hope their country needs them
IDENTICAL twin sisters Francine and Nicola Gleadall will be competing for the chance to represent the UK in this year's Eurovision Song Contest in a BBC talent show tonight.
The 20-year-olds, from Dronfield in South Yorkshire, say they're thrilled to have made it through to the final of Your Country Needs You, the winners of which will sing a song penned by Andrew Lloyd Webber in the contest in Moscow on May 16.
Lord Lloyd Webber was recruited to find this year's Eurovision entry after years of failure in the competition. The contestants have now been whittled down to the final three – the Gleadall twins, farmer's son Mark Evans and soul singer Jade Ewen.
Francine, the elder twin by 35 minutes, said she and her sister were "ecstatic" to reach the final of the competition. She added: "We've learnt so much over the past few weeks. We're so grateful for all the support we've had, and are going to give it our best shot.
"Words can't describe what we'd feel like if we won. It would be a dream come true."
This isn't the first shot at stardom for the girls, who made it through to the boot-camp stage of The X Factor last year and are currently both studying English at Sheffield Hallam University .
While at Henry Fanshawe School in Dronfield they formed their own group, Major Franix, and later, calling themselves Twin, opened for Simon Webbe at the Don Valley Bowl.
Sheffield Wednesday fans may also remember their performance of Slade's Cum on Feel the Noize at Hillsborough, which earned them an 80 fixed penalty fine for making obscene gestures at jeering Barnsley supporters.
In tonight's show the pair will perform Lord Lloyd Webber's song My Time, which was written with lyricist Diane Warren.
He said all three finalists would get the chance to premiere the song to the audience in their own way. "We've not heard any of them sing it before. It's the moment where the song comes together with the performer that anything can happen."
Your Country Needs You is on BBC1 at 6.40pm tonight.
