Twittering on...at the grand old age of 103

A great-grandmother who became the oldest member of Facebook will launch into cyberspace again today to join the latest social craze sweeping the world wide web.

At the age of 103, Ivy Bean, of Bradford, is thought to be the UK's oldest "tweeter" using Twitter, the social networking phenomenon which allows users to post and read other people's social updates.

People can follow what Mrs Bean is up to on Silver Surfers' Day today by entering "IvyBean104" into Twitter.com

The former mill worker decided to sign up to social networking site, Facebook, after hearing about a 97-year-old French woman who was believed to be its oldest member.

Since joining last year, she has attracted almost 5,000 friends and has a further 17,775 people waiting to befriend her.

Keen to keep abreast of the latest social networking developments, Mrs Bean has now been trained by staff from IT support service, Geek Squad, who heard she was keen to give Twitter a try.

Her daughter Sandra Logan, 61, said: "It has given her a new lease of life and she has met some marvellous people all over the world. She speaks to a woman in Norway who has named a cow after her."

Geek Squad is now challenging the "Twittersphere" to find out if there is anyone older than Mrs Bean posting updates on their whereabouts and activities.

Elsewhere, thousands of pensioners in North Yorkshire will be able to surf the web in the county's libraries thanks to a new high-speed broadband connection.

The new service is due to be launched today as part of Digital Unite's Silver Surfers' Day.
