University experts in dentistry honoured
DENTAL experts from a Yorkshire university have been given life-time achievement awards in recognition of their work in the profession.
Professor Ric van Noort and Professor Geoff Craig from Sheffield University were presented with the John Tomes Medal of the British Dental Association (BDA) at an awards dinner in London.
The medal is awarded by the BDA for outstanding services to dentistry or the association and to honour members of the dental profession who have carried out leading scientific research.
Prof van Noort is a member of the Academic Unit of Restorative Dentistry at the university's School of Clinical Dentistry.
He was the head of the Department of Adult Dental Care from 2003 to 2007. He has also been the chairman of the Dental Materials of the UK and has organised six biennial European Dental Materials Conferences.
Prof van Noort said: "To be presented with this award as a dental materials scientist is a great honour and makes me feel very proud to be so recognised for my work by the dental profession."
Prof Craig retired from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the School of Dentistry last December where he had been the Dean of Learning and Teaching from 2004 to 2007.
He was the president of the British Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from 2000 to 2003 and featured regularly in the media as a forensic dentist in high profile cases involving bite marks.
He was also the president of the British Association for Forensic Odontology from 2005 to 2008 and chaired the BDA's Health and Science Committee for several years.
Prof Craig said: "To be honoured in this way by one's peers is for me the highlight of a career that has given me immense professional and personal satisfaction."
