University honour for pioneering businessman
A FLAMBOYANT Scarborough businessman, who has been a guiding light of the town's Urban Renaissance, is among a number of VIPs to be honoured by the University of Hull this summer.
Tom Pindar will receive an honorary doctorate at the graduation of the University's Scarborough Campus students on Friday.
Mr Pindar is Lifetime President of the Pindar printing and electronic media firm. A family business still based in Scarborough, it was acquired 130 years ago by Mr Pindar's grandfather, who moved to the town to escape the smog of Leeds.
Tom Pindar took over the business from his father in 1954 and continued to make a name for himself in the industry by pioneering new type-setting methods.
Today, the business, based at Eastfield, near Scarborough, is the largest privately-owned firm in the industry with operations in the UK, US and New Zealand.
Tom Pindar's involvement with Hull University followed on from his position as chairman of governors of the original University College, Scarborough, the former teacher training college on Filey Road which became Hull's Scarborough campus.
Other honorary doctorates will be conferred to Coca-Cola chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent, entrepreneur and marketeer Judith Donovan, and poet Sean O'Brien.
Also honoured will be international law specialist Professor Jo Carby-Hall, Pro-Chancellor Emeritus John Parkes, international investment law specialist Professor Zhu Chongshi, former CEO of BP Alternative Energy Vivienne Cox, and neuroscientist Prof Barry Everitt.
Prof David Drewry, Vice Chancellor, said: "We are proud to count such notable people amongst our honorary graduates, and the award of an honorary degree recognises their significant contributions to a broad range of fields."
