Unluckiest punter misses £800,000 win

BOOKMAKERS have declared a gambler from Yorkshire their "unluckiest punter of 2008" after he made a disastrous decision which cost him almost £800,000.

Paul Greenwood, 52, of Barnsley, was picked out by William Hill for what it called "its most galling betting hard luck story".

The electronics engineer lost out on March 1, after making a last-minute alteration to his weekly 10 accumulator bet, in which he predicts wins for 14 football teams.

As a Manchester United fan, Mr Greenwood would normally pick the Old Trafford team as winners.

But he thought the Reds would field a team of reserves against Fulham that weekend, because they had been playing in Europe, and changed his top team to Arsenal.

"But then my other 13 teams won and Arsenal only drew against Aston Villa. Then I saw that Manchester United had beaten Fulham, which meant I lost a massive amount of money. It was a kick in the teeth."

The father-of-four said it took him four or five months to get over the disappointment, but he has continued to put on bets.

And in the last few weeks he has had a bit of luck, winning when he backed Kauto Star in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, and netting almost 1,000 on another football accumulator before Christmas.

Mr Greenwood, of Sycamore Street, Barnsley, added: "I blew all the cash on presents for the kids and sent two of my daughters and their children on holiday to Florida.

"William Hill's have given me a 1,000 free bet because they say I am the unluckiest punter of 2008, but I am not sure what I will put the money on yet. I might just back Arsenal again."
