Unlucky Alf brings good fortune to charities for the sick
ROTHERHAM author Dene Lindley has surprised himself by writing a novel for charity that has resulted in 400 sales within five weeks of publication.
Unlucky Alf has already raised more than 600 for charities such as Rotherham Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice and Nottingham University Hospitals Kinder Appeal.
Dene, who has a day job as a management consultant, set out to write a story that would entertain people and raise money for charity at the same time.
And he has been overwhelmed with the response to the not-for-profit book, which combines his childhood memories with a splash of imagination.
"The feedback has been phenomenal, which is the icing on the cake for me," he said.
"I started this journey with the intention of raising money for these charities by writing a novel that was mildly amusing – but I never dreamt it would be received so well.
"Hopefully it will continue to sell and raise more money."
Unlucky Alf follows the adventures of a young boy, Alf Hart, growing up in a tough 1960s mining town in South Yorkshire.
Black humour is a key theme, with real-life concerns such as alcoholism, racism, schizophrenia and bullying being seen through the eyes of an innocent child.
But Dene said the motivation for writing the book wasn't just because he wanted to make people laugh.
"I'm glad people have enjoyed my book but the main thing is about raising money," he said.
"If you walk into any hospice and see what goes on then you are humbled.
"That's why I wanted the novel to sell – these places need the money.
"I'm no saint but I wanted to do anything I could to help them. They need the money more than me."
Unlucky Alf costs 6.99 and anyone wanting to know where to pick up a copy can visit the website www.unluckyalf.co.uk.
