Unveiling for £60,000 rowing boat
An adventurer aiming to become the first person to run a six-day, 151-mile marathon in the Sahara Desert and then row across the Atlantic in the same year has unveiled a revolutionary boat to complete his epic journey.
Property company boss Charlie Pitcher, 46, of Felsted, Essex, said the InsureandGo boat – named after his main sponsor – was the first of its kind.
The father-of-four hopes to raise 100,000 for the renal unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, in memory of his friend Shaun McLeod Jones, 40, who died in 2003 after spending 13 years on dialysis at the hospital.
The 60,000 carbon-constructed boat has a canoe-like hull to help it surf across larger waves and a cabin situated at the front to propel it in following winds.
Mr Pitcher will try to cross the Atlantic early in December.
