Varleys stunned by Carlisle success

JUST before going to press with this issue of Farming in Yorkshire we received a call from John Varley.

"Thought I'd ring you because we've just won up at Carlisle and sold our bull for 52,000 guineas. It might never happen again for us."

Indeed they did and what's more it was the third highest price ever paid for a Limousin bull and the highest price recorded for any Limousin to be sold abroad as it was bought by an Irish farmer from County Meath.

Pat Varley tells of her legs being the first to 'go' when their bull, handled by son Daniel, was announced as the winner.

"I just couldn't believe it, and I rang John and neither could he."

Jim Mulholland was the judge and he chose the Varley's bull – Queenshead Altea - out of 190 bulls.

John and Pat, who farm at Myrtle Grove Farm, Queensbury only started with cattle in 1990, eventually becoming pedigree breeders. They are metal fabricators by trade, but they have impressed at shows for a number of years.
