Victorian era comes to life as people explore their city roots
A BYGONE era will be brought to life in Hull tomorrow with a Victorian extravaganza.
Historic Trinity Square will come to life with costumed characters, horse and carriage rides, and a chance to consult experts on how to trace family history.
The event ties in with the national "Who Do We Think We Are" project, which aims to get people to explore their roots.
At the Hands on History museum people in dress of the day will bring Victorian history to life with real Victorian toys and craft making.
In Trinity Square children from Trinity School and St Nicholas primary school, dressed in traditional costume, will sing songs of the time and carry out old school drills. Victorian horse and carriage rides and walking tours round old Hull will leave the square regularly during the day.
At Holy Trinity Church representatives from the Imperial War Museum North and the Society of Genealogists will help people interested in their family history. Gale Newspapers will pinpoint local newspaper articles from years gone by. There will also be a chance to see the city from above as you climb to the church's rooftop. Assistant Curator Susan Capes said: "We'd like everyone to come along and enjoy discovering what everyday life was like more than a hundred years ago.
"There are lots of activities going on to help people explore their heritage in a fun way, whether they want to research their family or just find out a bit more about the past."
The event is run in partnership with Hull City Council's museums and Museum Education Service, the University of Hull and its Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation (WISE), East Riding Council and Hull BID.
