Video: Yorkshire to Cumbria rail route rated second best in world

The Venice Simplon Orient Express and the Trans-Siberian Railway may be legendary but they can't compare with the spectacular railway journey between Settle and Carlisle, which has now been ranked the second best train trip in the world.

Famed for its scenic splendour, the line has been voted number two in the list of best train trips by an American news network, eclipsing both the Trans-Siberian and Orient Express.

The 72-mile route, which boasts breathtaking scenery from Yorkshire to Cumbria, was topped only by South Africa's Blue Train in the ABC News survey of the world's top ten great railway journeys.

Mark Rand, chairman of the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line, said: "We always knew the Settle and Carlisle was extra special, but to be ranked number two in the whole world is a real honour. Now we need to spread the word and bring in people from all corners of the globe."

The historic line, which passes over the 24 arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct, has long been famous for its stunning views.

Rail routes in Malaysia, Syria, India, Switzerland and Kenya also featured in the top ten.
