Video: Strictly's Craig Revel Horwood teaches children dancing

HE might have a reputation as a harsh critic but BBC TV's Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood showed his lighter side yesterday.

The Australian-born dancer, choreographer and theatre director was in Keighley to teach a few moves to pupils at Eastburn Junior and Infant School.

It is one of six primary schools to win a day of dance lessons from the celebrity dance judge, who – as a patron of the National Osteoporosis Society – is promoting dancing as an ideal exercise to maintain healthy bones.

Hundreds of schools from across the UK entered the competition, which was designed to teach children how to Boogie for their Bones.

Eastburn Junior and Infant School pupils were selected for their unique and creative dance as well as their understanding of the importance of weight-bearing exercise and a healthy diet to increase bone health.

Horwood said: "I've teamed up with the National Osteoporosis Society because dance is a great form of exercise for building stronger bones, and a fun way to teach children the importance of keeping their bones healthy.

"To mark World Osteoporosis Day we're embarking on a Bone Factor Tour of the six winning primary schools, where I'll be giving them a bone healthy dance lesson – and perhaps they can teach me a move or two."

During Horwood's visit, the Eastburn pupils performed their winning dance and picked up some dance move tips from the expert.

Dr Claire Bowring, of the National Osteoporosis Society, said: "Bones stop growing in length between the ages of 16 and 18, and peak bone density is reached in our mid 20s.

"Regular weight-bearing exercise when we are young, like dancing, combined with a healthy diet means that we can build stronger bones at this crucial time to support us as we get older."
