Villagers ponder mystery set in stone
EASTER Island in the Pacific Ocean has its enigmatic stone heads – and now villagers in North Yorkshire are puzzling over a smaller version of the mystery.
Six carved stone heads suddenly appeared early one morning at locations around Kilburn, including one at the Forresters Arms hotel.
The carvings have different characteristics but all six bear the same inscription – "Twinkle, twinkle, like a star. Does love flourish from afar" – which has left villagers scratching their own heads.
Fiona Gould, who runs the hotel, said it needed two men to lift the 12in-high head – the biggest of the six – from where it had been placed on her doorstep, so she could put it on show in the bar.
She said: "They're made of what we think is local Yorkshire stone. We all just want to know where they've come from. Everyone's got a theory – some people think it's a curse."
The heads' appearance follows reports of similar stone carvings turning up in the same way in Goathland, on the opposite side of the North York Moors.
Villagers there were unwilling to talk about the heads, which then seemed to disappear as suddenly as they arrived.
The mystery only deepened after a couple dining at the Forresters Arms said they had heard of something similar in their village near Selby, many miles to the south.
