Vital skills to be preserved in national park
Some of the most experienced estate workers in the North York Moors National Park will pass on their knowledge to trainees under a new apprenticeship scheme.
Launched by the North York Moors National Park Authority, English Heritage and York University, the two-year apprenticeships will offer hands-on experience in a range of building maintenance and conservation skills in some of the region’s most stunning locations.
The Government-funded scheme, which is also being backed by York College, is being offered to three young people, aged 16 to 19, and is expected to start in Easter.
The apprentices will be based on estates in the North York Moors area, spending most of their time working with experienced building maintenance teams to conserve its distinctive local heritage.
The project’s aim is to preserve the knowledge of some of the most experienced estate workers in the National Park by passing on their skills and expertise to a younger generation. It is also hoped the opportunity will help the youngsters find employment in the local area. During the two years, the apprentices will focus on a specific craft, such as masonry, brickwork or carpentry, and will also spend time with English Heritage learning about the management of archaeological earthworks.
At the end of the scheme, it is hoped that all three will have achieved an NVQ Level 2 in a building craft and gained additional skills needed for conserving the National Park.
Sophie Norton, fellow for traditional building skills at York University’s Centre for Conservation Studies, said: “High quality practical training will ensure the apprentices are able to conserve buildings in accordance with good practice, using sought after skills that will help them protect the valuable built heritage of North Yorkshire in a sustainable way.”
Details on how to apply will be available on York University’s website at www.york.ac.uk/archaeology/research/current-projects/nhta/ later this month.
