Wartime icon to go up for auction
IT was designed to serve as a mechanical mule but the Willys Jeep performed so effectively in the Second World War that it has become an icon of military vehicle design.
Many thousands were made and used in virtually every theatre of war, but at the end of the conflict some were simply pushed into the sea as the allied armies disarmed.
Around 1,500 are known to survive in running condition in the UK and one of those is to be auctioned on Sunday, commanding interest from bidders as far away as Russia. The 1942 model was found dismantled and rusting away in a series of packing cases in the mid 1980s and was lovingly restored over a three-year period by its previous owner.
Since 1999 it has been in the hands of military enthusiast Peter Cottam, 77, of Rotherham, but he is now selling it to concentrate on a different project.
The jeep will go under the hammer at Paul Beighton Auctioneers at the Old Cinema, Woodhouse Green, Thurcroft, Rotherham, at 11am on Sunday.
