Watch the birdie: Rare flamingo chick born at Harewood
ALL eyes were on the fluffy new arrival at Harewood House, near Leeds, yesterday, the first flamingo born there for almost 20 years.
The tiny chick was discovered yesterday in Harewood's Bird Garden, but its not yet known whether it is male or female.
John Waller, head of the Bird Garden, said yesterday: "Many of our Chilean flamingos arrived around 40 years ago, and we haven't had an egg for 20 years.
"We've been researching why the flamingos haven't bred and this year we have ensured their surroundings are more conducive to egg-laying.
"Our hard work has paid off and almost 20 years to the day, we were delighted this morning to discover our first one had hatched. We have another four eggs which have been 'sat' so we are hopeful there will be the sound of many tiny feet at the Harewood Bird Garden over the summer season and beyond."
People can send suggestions for a name, hopefully suitable for either sex, to info@harewood.org and the winner will officially "adopt" the flamingo.
