Webcam star cheese passes its taste test
Thousands of fans eagerly logged on to the internet yesterday to witness the latest milestone in the life of a 44lb cheddar cheese.
Over the past nine months, more than 1.5m people across the world have logged on to www.cheddarvision.tv to watch the round of cheese as it slowly matures. Viewing reached fever pitch yesterday morning when, for only the second time during the project, something actually happened.
The handmade Westcountry Farmhouse Cheddar cheese, nicknamed Wedginald by its creators, was put through its paces as it underwent its nine-month grading test.In the previous three days, 35,000 viewers had logged on to the website.
And yesterday thousands more logged on to watch as an expert cheese taster pierced Wedginald to remove a core of the creamy white cheese. The core was then rigorously sniffed and tasted to check for "depth and maturity".
Thankfully, Wedginald passed with flying colours, exhibiting "little hints of caramel and a note of green grass on the nose".
The cheese has become a big hit, with over 1,250 registered MySpace friends. A time-lapse video of Wedginald's first three months has been viewed on YouTube more than 344,000 times. Expert cheese taster Tom Calver said: "It's been amazing. We still can't believe it."
The project is based at a farm in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.
