Workman finds buried Luger
Workman Bob Shimmels with the Second World War Luger pistol he found while clearing a site in Story Street, Hull, to make way for the new Wilberforce Health Centre.
The Luger was a side arm for the German Army and a prized "souvenir" for Allied soldiers. Thousands were taken home during both world wars.
Workers were excavating a trench on a gable end in a row of terraced houses, when it was found buried around 8ft deep.
Mr Shimmels, 34, was directing the digger when he spotted it.
He added: "I've never found anything else like this. It's amazing."
The 9mm calibre pistol was found at around the same depth as a fireplace of number 10, Story Street.
Stamped with the date 1943, it could be one of the last ever made by the German arms manufacturer Mauser, as it ceased production of Lugers that year.
