SINCE it was founded in 1132, Fountains Abbey has been a place of pilgrimage for millions of people throughout the passing centuries.

And visitors to the World Heritage site near Ripon are being given the chance to get an insight into what life would have been like had they arrived in the late medieval era.

Historical re-enactors have taken over the North Yorkshire site to set up camp and provide a taste of what Britain would have been like in the 15th century.

Members of the re-enactment group, Rosa Mundi, ranging from toddlers to pensioners in their 80s travelled from across the North of England to take part in the event.

It began on Saturday and will come to an end today, and involves demonstrations of medieval crafts and cookery techniques.

The historical re-enactment is part of a summer programme of events which is being organised at the National Trust site.

An event is being held every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday up until August 26 to give visitors the opportunity to learn more about life as a monk at Fountains Abbey.

Craft workshops for children are also being organised at the abbey, which became a National Trust property in 1983 and remains one its most popular sites, every day throughout the school holidays.
