Yorkshire cheeses strike gold at top awards
YORKSHIRE cheeses have been put on the map with a strong showing at the British Cheese Awards.
The Wensleydale Creamery alone scooped five top awards at the most prestigious cheese event of the year.
The creamery, at Hawes, in North Yorkshire, which is battling to win protected designation of origin status from the European Union, won two gold medals for its Real Yorkshire Wensleydale and Traditional Double Gloucester, two silver for its Real Yorkshire Wensleydale and Blue Real Yorkshire Wensleydale and one bronze for its Traditional Red Leicester at the awards, held in Cardiff.
They were joined by several others, including Driffield-based Epicures Larder, Dan Dairies (UK), based in Leeds, and Swaledale Cheese, which picked up three awards.
Lowna Dairy, based at Rayfield near Cottingham in East Yorkshire, won two awards.
The award ceremony was set up in 1994 by renowned cheese expert Juliet Harbutt to raise the profile of British cheese and create a recognised symbol of excellence.
David Hartley, Wensleydale Creamery's managing director, said: "This is the most prestigious event in Britain in the cheesemakers' calendar so to win two golds, two silvers and a bronze for our cheeses is of particular pride to The Wensleydale Creamery.
"While we are, probably, best known for our Real Yorkshire Wensleydale, these awards demonstrate that The Wensleydale Creamery also produces other varieties of top quality English cheese."
