Youngest Anglican bishop consecrated in York
THE Church of England's youngest bishop assumed his new role when he was consecrated in York Minster.
The Right Rev Mark Davies has been appointed to the landmark post at the age of just 45 and became the new Suffragan, or assistant, Bishop of Middleton in the Diocese of Manchester during a ceremony overseen by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu.
Dr Sentamu also consecrated his own chaplain, the Right Rev Robert Paterson, who now becomes the new Bishop of Sodor and Man based on the Isle of Man. He succeeds the Right Rev Graeme Knowles.
A third clergyman, the Right Rev Chris Edmondson, was consecrated during the ceremony on Friday as the new Suffragan Bishop of Bolton, succeeding the Right Rev David Gillett.
The Right Rev Davies, who succeeds the Right Rev Michael Lewis, trained at the College of the Resurrection in Mirfield before he became the curate in St Mary Church in Barnsley, and then the priest-in-charge of St Paul's Church in the South Yorkshire town.
He was then the rector of Hemsworth, before becoming the rural dean of Pontefract and was made an honorary canon of Wakefield Cathedral in 2002. He became the Archdeacon of Rochdale in 2006.
The Right Rev Paterson, 58, who trained at St John's College and Cranmer Hall, Durham, has previously held the post of principal officer of the Church in Wales Council for mission and ministry.
Since 2002, he has been the vice-chairman of the Anglican Primates' working group on theological education. In 2004, he was made a canon of the Province of Wales and was appointed the chaplain and researcher to the Archbishop of York in 2006.
The Right Rev Edmondson, 57, has been the warden of Lee Abbey, a Christian community and conference centre in Devon, since 2002. He also trained at St John's College and Cranmer Hall, Durham.
He was previously the curate of Kirkheaton in Huddersfield, as well as the vicar of St George, Ovenden, and later the priest-in-charge of Bampton with Mardale in Carlisle.
He spent more than 10 years as the bishop's advisor on evangelism in Wakefield and was then the vicar of St Peter's Church in Shipley before becoming the warden of Lee Abbey.
