Slumdog Millionaire
FILM: Yorkshire screenwriter Simon Beaufoy brings his own take on how a Indian teenager realises his dreams by winning a game show.

Bouncers
STAGE: In a fitting end for Hull's Spring Street venue, John Godber directs his classic comedy before the move into a new state-of-the- art theatre. Jan 15 to Feb 14.
Skin Deep
OPERA: Opera North's full season begins in earnest at Leeds Grand and includes Skin Deep, a new full-length opera written by Armando Iannucci – the creator of Alan Partridge. It's one definitely not to miss. From Jan 16.
Seasick Steve
MUSIC: Bringing a little piece of Mississippi to Leeds Academy, the likeable song and dance man continues on his world tour. Jan 27.
Treasures from the V&A
ART: Treasures spanning more than 1,200 years of European art come to Sheffield. Highly detailed work which once adorned great abbeys and churches will be on display, with letters from Mary Queen of Scots and a reconstruction of Sheffield Castle. Millennium Gallery. Jan 29 to May 5.
Revolutionary Road
FILM: Much talked about reunion of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio should get the film year off to a great start. Jan 30.
February
Othello
STAGE: Lenny Henry will be out to prove that he can do tragedy as well as comedy in the Northern Broadsides' version of Othello at West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds. Feb 14 to Mar 14.
Harvest
STAGE: Richard Bean's critically acclaimed play tracing the fortunes of an East Yorkshire farm over 100 years. Hull New Theatre.
Feb 16-21.
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
STAGE: The haunting human story of a young knight's epic journey through the changing seasons to find the Green Chapel and keep his appointment with fate. This tale of temptation, romance and chivalry should be a theatrical treat. Carriageworks, Leeds. Feb 18 & 19.
Gran Torino
FILM: After various stints behind the camera, Clint Eastwood returns to acting as a Korean war vet determined to show a young teenager right from wrong. Feb 20.
March
The Killers
MUSIC: The Las Vegas outfit have capitalised on the success of their debut album Hot Fuss and their latest, Day and Age, has proved they are here to stay. Sheffield Arena. Mar 2.
Don John
STAGE: Set in the winter of discontent, Kneehigh Theatre's latest production takes its inspiration from Mozart's Don Giovanni. With a specially commissioned score, this promises to be a show to remember. West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds. Mar 18-28.
The Damned United
FILM: Michael Sheen plays Brian Clough in the hugely anticipated big screen version of David Peace's novel about the football manager's ill-fated spell in charge of Leeds Utd. Mar 27.

Hogarth: Industry and Idleness
ART: Showcase of prints by the master of the political cartoon. The exhibition from Sheffield's own collection
will expertly show Hogarth's eye for detail and caricature. Graves Gallery, Sheffield.

The Tempest
STAGE: Antony Sher plays Prospero in this new RSC production of Shakespeare's magical play. Lyceum, Sheffield. Apr 21-25.
Bob Dylan
MUSIC: A bone fide veteran of the music scene, Dylan proves some things do get better with age and this is a rare chance to see the man live. Sheffield Arena. Apr 24.
Basement Jaxx
MUSIC: The critically acclaimed UK house duo rose to popularity in the late 1990s and when it comes to producing instantly catchy music Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe have not lost their Midas touch. Leeds Academy. Apr 26.

Morrissey
MUSIC: Critics may call him a doom and gloom merchant, but there are few people who write better lyrics than The Smiths' frontman. Hull Arena. May 19.
The Homecoming
STAGE: Damien Cruden directs Harold Pinter's disturbing play, widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of 20th century theatre. York Theatre Royal. May 30-Jun 20.
His Dark Materials
STAGE: Ambitious staging of Philip Pullman's trilogy will use puppetry and spectacular sets to bring the parallel worlds to life. West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds. May 28 to Jun 20.

Peter Randall-Page
ART: Major exhibition of work by the stone carver will include three new limestone sculptures. Model, prints and drawings will also be on display showing how Randall-Page's ideas make it from the drawing board. Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield. Jun 27.

The Railway Children
STAGE: Mike Kenny's simply brilliant stage adaptation returns to York. If you didn't catch it last year, this is a must for 2009. National Railway Museum. Jul 23 to Sep 5.

Sherlock Holmes
FILM: Guy Ritchie directs and with Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock and Jude Law as his right hand man Watson, this promises to be cinema gold. Nov 20.
