Vice chancellor to take up UCL post

THE vice chancellor of Yorkshire’s biggest university is quitting his post next year to become president and provost of University College London (UCL).

Prof Michael Arthur, right, will leave his role at Leeds University in September.

The university has announced that the search for his successor will begin immediately.

Prof Arthur will succeed Prof Malcolm Grant, who is stepping down in September.

Leeds University’s pro-chancellor, Linda Pollard, said: “Michael Arthur has made a tremendous contribution to the University of Leeds since his appointment as our vice chancellor in 2004.

“We will be sorry to lose him, but wish him well in one of the top higher education jobs in the UK.”

During his time at Leeds Prof Arthur has overseen a controversial cost cutting exercise at Leeds University to find savings of £35m to prepare the institution for large reductions in higher education funding from Government. He was also chairman of the Russell Group representing the country’s elite research led universities – including both Leeds and UCL – for the past three years during major reforms in the sector.
