Plans to grant David Hockney the freedom of a town and to rename a gallery in his honour are unlikely to go ahead because he “isn’t interested”.

The town council in Bridlington, close to the Wolds which were the inspiration for some of his works, had proposed
that Mr Hockney be made a freeman of Bridlington and
that East Riding Council
(ERYC) considered changing the name of the gallery at the Spa to ‘The David Hockney Gallery’.

The suggestions came amid claims by neighbouring Hull City Council that they were drawing up “concept proposals” for a gallery showcasing the work of the artist, who has a residence in Bridlington.

But despite attempts to obtain a response from Mr Hockney, East Riding Council has not had any success to date and have concluded that he is not interested. Nigel Pearson, ERYC chief executive, has written to the town council to explain: “Unfortunately, we have not been able to obtain any response from Mr Hockney regarding the renaming of a gallery at The Spa or indeed in relation to the granting of the Freedom of Bridlington and I have to conclude therefore that this is something which does not appeal to him. Should there be any change I will, of course, let you know.”
