Hull shoplifting suspect drowns in escape bid
Hull's Kingswood retail park
A SUSPECTED shoplifter drowned in a river as he tried to escape being caught.
The 35-year-old was chased from Sports Direct, in Kingswood retail park in Hull, by security staff and ended up in the river Hull, behind Hollywood Bowl, shouting for help.
He was pulled from the river by firefighters and attempts were made to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at Hull Royal Infirmary.
The security firm involved, Shield Security Services, declined to comment.
They were reported as saying it was an “unfortunate occurrence” and they had “no issue” with any of the staff involved.
Humberside Police said the man had been “initially pursued” from Sports Direct.
Officers were not on the scene when the man went into the water, but his death is not being treated as suspicious.
A file is being prepared for the coroner.
In a statement the force said: “A call was made to Humberside Police at 11.42am on Tuesday reporting a shoplifter having made off from Sports Direct, Kingswood Retail Park in Hull.
“The man then jumped into some water behind Hollywood Bowl and emergency services made attempts to assist with getting him out of the water. Police, fire, ambulance and coastguard were all involved.”
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said they arrived on scene 12 minutes after they were called. Two firefighters went into the river and used a line to pull him out.
They added: “Emergency first aid was administered by the fire service using a defibrillator and the man was transported to Hull Royal Infirmary by ambulance.”
