More snow may be on the way
A severe weather warning remains in place as officials warn of cold weather and icy conditions that could bring further snow flurries to northern England.
The yellow alert issued yesterday warns of an 80 per cent chance of icy conditions that could increase health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt services.
Sleet and snow hit some areas of northern England over the weekend, including Yorkshire, but forecasters at the Met Office said any snow overnight would be confined to higher ground, with the risk of north easterly winds bringing showers to the rest of the region.
Today is likely to be mostly dry, but overcast. Maximum temperatures will be around 5C (41F).
Conditions are expected to improve throughout the week, though with the risk of freezing fog during early mornings and further rain in the north.
Just one flood warning is in place for the UK, affecting Dorset, with five flood alerts in place for areas of Dorset and Wiltshire.
A MeteoGroup forecaster said temperatures were expected to rise back to normal ranges by the end of the week before cold winds move in from the north west.
