Video: How they rescued Wonky, stray the nation took to its heart

Waiting for Video...

SHE’S the bandy-legged puppy who captured the hearts of the nation.

The 12-week old Staffy crossbreed - nicknamed Wonky - suffers from horrific ‘knuckling’ that limited her mobility.

The poorly pooch was found wandering the streets of Leeds as a stray and was brought to Dogs Trust by a member of the public over a fortnight ago.

Wonky, who has now been renamed Juliette, is on the road to recovery and is finally able to play and run around after intense physiotherapy.

And she has well and truly captured the nation’s hearts after more than 600 people contacted the rehoming shelter on York Road to offer her a new home.

Amanda Sands, manager at Dogs Trust Leeds, said: “She is getting on absolutely fine and her legs so much stronger.

“We didn’t think it would be quite as quick as this.”

The little puppy has endured 30 physiotherapy sessions a day to help her get back on her feet.

Her condition meant that her front feet bent inwards because her tendons were too short.

But Amanda has put a combination of physiotherapy, care and a good diet down to Juliette’s recovery.

She said that intially she was concerned about whether there would be any interest in the puppy but the centre had been innundated.

Amanda added: “People have been really kind ringing up and wishing her all the best as well.”

Dogs Trust Leeds Vet John Wannop said: “The long term prognosis for her I think is very good.

“She will need to be kept under review until we see how she goes but so far so good with this and we are very pleased with her progress.”

A spokesperson for Dogs Trust added: “Staff are currently sifting through 600 applications to take Juliette in, and are confident she will get a happy new home soon.

“If you are interested in any of the other dogs the charity have in their care, please visit www.dogstrust.org.uk.”

Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 16,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year through its network of 18 Rehoming Centres.
