Dieters given some food for thought on mood swings
FEELING grouchy can cause dieters to abandon their weight-loss goals in favour of eating something nice, claim academics from Sheffield University.
Yesterday, scientists in the university’s psychology department warned fasters not to allow a bad mood to lead them to fail to abstain during Lent.
Research published in the British Journal of Social Psychology now shows that forming a “specific plan” on how to manage mood can help dieters to resist impulsive behaviour.
Dr Thomas Webb said: “Almost one third of people who make resolutions keep them for less than one week.
“Considerable evidence now suggests that deciding when, where, and how to act in advance can help people to stick to their goals.
“This type of plan is called an implementation intention and specifies both a good opportunity in which to act and a suitable response to that opportunity.”
