Leeds: Golden Olympic postbox vandalised

One of the postboxes painted gold in honour of Team GB’s Olympic heroes has been vandalised in Leeds.

The box which was painted to mark Alistair Brownlee’s gold medal triumph in the triathlon at London 2012 has been daubed with graffiti.

People living in the Horsforth area of Leeds were shocked to find someone had badly stencilled what appear to be the words “Time to Waste” or “Gone to Waste” on the box in runny black paint.

Sub-postmaster Sardarah Singh said he found the graffiti this morning.

But the Royal Mail, which has painted boxes around the UK to mark each of Team GB’s gold medals, has vowed to repaint it gold.

Royal Mail spokeswoman Morag Turnbull said: “We are extremely disappointed that someone has chosen to vandalise the gold postbox painted to recognise the gold medal-winning achievement of Alistair Brownlee.

“We have teams around the UK which look after and maintain our 115,000 postboxes and we will repair the damage to this box as soon as possible.”

The damage to Brownlee’s box follows a similar incident in Sheffield when someone scrawled “Go Jess” on the one dedicated to heptathlete Jessica Ennis just two days after her triumph in the Olympic Stadium.
