A LEEDS United fan has been banned from matches for three years for shouting racial abuse at a Manchester United fan.

Nadeem Moss, 22, is the latest to receive a football banning order following trouble at the Carling Cup match between the two clubs on September 20.

Leeds Magistrates Court heard Moss, of Blakeney Road in Middleton, has a Pakistani father and an English mother.

Mike Vittis, prosecuting, said he was with a group of other Leeds fans in the south east stand who were seen chanting at the Manchester United fans.

He said: “This defendant in particular was heard by a police officer swearing and shouting.

“Police did not intervene at the time but kept an eye on him and arrested him on the way out.”

Kara Frith, mitigating for Moss, said her client admitted shouting racial slurs, but denied they were directed at a particular individual.

She added: “While his comments were clearly racist, he is not racist.

“He understands these comments would cause somebody great distress.”

Moss was fined £250 and ordered to pay £85 costs in addition to the ban.

Another Leeds fan, Michael Johnson, escaped a ban yesterday after admitting disorderly conduct at the same game.

The court heard the 47-year-old, of Grove Place in Wetherby, was charged after he swore at a steward who ordered him to leave the ground because he did not have a ticket.

But Nick Hammond, mitigating, told magistrates the incident happened after Johnson approached the steward to tell him he had lost his ticket.

Johnson was given a conditional discharge at Leeds Magistrates Court.
