Six workers injured as Yorkshire biscuit factory hit by blaze following explosion
AN investigation has begun after a blast and fire at a Yorkshire factory left six people in hospital.
The incident at Fox’s Biscuits in Batley happened at about 10.45am yesterday when a diesel storage tank outside the factory exploded as it was being drained and cleaned.
One man, a contractor, was taken to hospital with burns to his legs after being rescued by firefighters.
Five other people were treated after breathing in smoke.
Production at the plant was halted for around four hours and 450 staff evacuated.
A company spokesman said the injured man was receiving treatment and was “sitting up and talking”.
Mel Bugler, acting managing director of Fox’s Biscuits, said: “Safety is the highest priority across all of our sites.
“Clearly there will be a full investigation. However, our first priority is the welfare of the affected contractor and we are liaising with the hospital and being kept informed on the situation.
“As a precaution we evacuated the site following the incident and followed all of our safety and emergency procedures.”
He added: “All of our 450 colleagues have been accounted for, they are safe and warm and we have now returned to full production.”
