Surprise arrival makes farm history

A LITTLE bundle of history was made at Temple Newsam’s Home Farm, in Leeds, last week with the arrival of its first newborn donkey.

The distinctive female white foal, seen with Farm Service Officer Shelley Rogerson, is the first to be born at the farm with the newcomer taking after her father, a white donkey stallion, named Arthur, who stayed at the farm last year.

The new arrival came as a surprise to staff, who were not aware her mother, Maria, was pregnant until she suddenly gained weight a month ago. The foal can now be seen on the farm and visitors are invited to take part in a competition to name her. Temple Newsam estate manager Maria Akers said: “The newborn foal caught us by surprise a bit but now she is here she is absolutely beautiful and is giving the lambs a real run for their money in the cuteness stakes.” PICTURE: Mark BickerdikE
