Television presenter and rugby league legend latest to get city’s star treatment

Television presenter Jane McDonald and rugby reague legend Neil Fox have become the latest figures to receive star treatment from the city of Wakefield.

The pair were yesterday awarded Wakefield Star plaques, and will join the likes of John Godber, Charles Waterton and indie band The Cribs, by having their names immortalised in the centre of the city.

Wakefield Council leader Peter Box said: “These stars are a lasting and ongoing celebration of individual talent and achievements, giving Wakefield its own walk of fame. I am particularly pleased that Neil and Jane have been chosen as they are excellent ambassadors for Wakefield.” Former Loose Women presenter Jane McDonald spoke of her delight in receiving the award, and said: “I cannot tell you how proud I am. This is a great honour.”

Neil Fox, who received the freedom of the city last year, added: “I am delighted to receive a Wakefield Star and would like to thank the public for voting for me.”

Novelist Stan Barstow, who died earlier this year, and Elizabethan explorer Sir Martin Frobisher, were also honoured.

The new set of plaques will be unveiled later this month along Westmorland Street, forming part of the route from the Bull Ring to Wakefield Waterfront.

Nominations for next year’s awards are now open to the public, who can vote on the council’s website, at their local library, or the Tourist Information Centre.
